Selection and installation of video surveillance systems in a private house

05 December 2021

Building an effective security system for a smart home is always on the agenda, regardless of the country or city in which the property is located. One of the most common and effective technological ways to ensure perimeter security is the construction of a video surveillance system.

How to properly install a video surveillance system for your home

Designing and installing a video surveillance system is a responsible task, because the safety of the owner of the house and his family depends on the quality of the work performed.

Factors that are taken into account when choosing equipment

Engineers who design video surveillance systems, as a rule, take into account such factors:

  • The area of the plot. The choice of the number and models of video cameras depends on how much area will have to be covered by surveillance;

  • The distance to the objects that the observation should cover. The resolution of the video and, as a result, the camera model depends on it;

  • Location of cameras. Whether the cameras will be hidden or open. Do I need protection from moisture? How far they will be located from the recording equipment. The choice of technical characteristics of video cameras depends on all these characteristics;

  • The method of transmitting and recording information. The choice of the method of information transmission depends on which recording and storage tool will be selected and which equipment will be purchased.

Types of equipment

There are two types of video cameras that are used when installing a surveillance system and that use a different type of signal: analog and digital.

  • Analog cameras. They are simple and reliable in operation. The image is transmitted as an analog signal.

    • The advantage of analog cameras is the higher quality of night video shooting. If it is necessary to organize surveillance of objects at night, with low lighting quality, for example, for permanent protection, it is better to install an analog camera.

    • The disadvantages of an analog camera are the same — signal transmission in analog format. The analog signal takes up much more space, to record such a picture requires much more space on the carrier, also requires more power to process information. If you need to record large amounts of video information, then an analog camera is not the best choice.

  • Digital cameras. The signal is transmitted in digital format.

    • Advantage. The digital video format allows you to quickly process a large amount of information. The image quality in the daytime or at night in good light is much better than that of an analog camera. You can zoom in on the image in real time to recognize faces and license plates on cars;

    • Disadvantages. For a digital camera, you need to carry out additional power. The image quality in poor lighting is not of the highest quality.

In addition, there are two types of transmission of information from the camera to the media:

  • Using a cable;

  • Via WiFi.

Both methods have their advantages. For example, it is more rational to use a cable at short distances. And if it is necessary to build video surveillance in a large area, it is better to put cameras with WiFi – cables can always be cut imperceptibly into a radio signal – no.
